The Man Next Door Knows — Episode 1

What happens in episode 1 of The Man Next Door Knows

Episode 1 of The Man Next Door Knows is one errand in a quiet suburban house, where a lonely wife lets the neighbour in to change a bulb. It runs 88 seconds.

Amanda opens her grey clapboard front door only halfway, peeking around it at the neighbour on her porch. The house behind her is spotless and quiet — too quiet. Episode 1 follows a simple errand: a light bulb in the kitchen, a few minutes of small talk, the sort of attention she has not had from her travelling husband in months.

The best scene is the one she plays alone. At the bathroom mirror she pulls her linen shirt open and studies herself with a serious, almost accusing look, as if checking whether the neighbour saw what she thinks he saw. Later a towel, a worried frown and a phone ringing on the coffee table make clear the marriage is still in the room. Nine episodes is a mid-length arc for a quiet, adult story about being noticed again.
