I Picked Up a Hitchhiker — Episode 1

What happens in episode 1 of I Picked Up a Hitchhiker

Episode 1 of I Picked Up a Hitchhiker is a desert road trip in a teal pickup, from the first lift to a sunset stop. It runs 68 seconds.

Heat haze, mesas on the horizon, an empty two-lane road and a teal pickup that has clearly been rebuilt more than once. A blonde with a backpack leans in at the passenger window, mid-sentence, before the driver has fully stopped. By sunset she is in the cab eating his crisps and laughing; by the next stop she is pouring a water bottle over herself next to the truck bed.

Episode 1 is a road movie in sixty-eight seconds. The driver is defiantly ordinary — cap, flannel shirt, short beard — and the joke of the series is how little that matters to her. It is one of the lightest, sunniest openers we host, with warm orange grading and an easy pace. Five episodes keep the trip moving toward wherever she claims she is going.
